Geometric to Organic Shape

This is always a good way to review shape with my 4th grade students.  Using water color markers they make geometric shapes.  Then spray with water and let them bleed. Next they outline with sharpie marker.  Will post again when the next step is completed!

Classes in full force producing Art To Remember!

All of our classes at CCE are working feverishly to complete their art work for our Art To Remember fundraiser.  This will help with special supplies and to bring in guest artists during our Cultural Arts week.

After School Art class finishes strong!

My after school art students had to choose an artist, whose work they admired, and reproduce a piece of of their work.  This was their last project of the year and they really finished well.  They had to really study the piece and try to use the painting techniques used by that particular artist.  These are just a few  of the pieces.

My first grade class has been working on collage.  They used watercolor in the background first to make the sky.

Color mixing in Kindergarten

My K students are learning about mixing primary colors to make secondary colors! We are using science as we discover the effects of mixing these primary colors to see what our new color will be. They are then applying these secondary colors to their projects by mixing them themselves.

Found object sculpture workshop

This past weekend I attended a workshop where we had to create literacy sculptures out of found objects.  You walk in, there is stuff everywhere, and we had to figure out how to put it together.  It is not easy!  In fact, it really stretches your "problem solving" muscle.  Here are two of the three sculptures I was able to put together.

This was something that my husband found on the internet and it was so cute, I just had to share: "When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared back at me, incredulous, and said 'You mean they forgot?'" by Howard Ikemoto.

5th grade Work in DEPTH

Creating DEPTH on a two dimensional surface is a tricky thing. These 5th grade students worked through the process of making things look farther away.

5th grade learning about Complements.

In this project, 5th grade students were reviewing COMPLEMENTARY COLOR. Those are colors that are OPPOSITE in nature and placed OPPOSITE each other on the color wheel.

3rd Grade Weavers

Students learn about the art of weaving. After reviewing a brief history of weaving and how the technique is used today, they began their personal weavings. In some cases optical illusions were created as they wove.  This class wove twisted tissue into black construction paper.  

3rd Grade Students Learn About Analogous Color

Below you can see three different Analogous Color schemes. Analogous colors are colors that are related, in the same family. They are located next to each other on the color wheel. Many times, they can invoke a feeling or a mood to the artwork.  My students have been learning what analogous colors are and why artists might use them in their paintings or drawings.

First Grade Portraits

Portraits are always a fun project to do with 1st grade students as they learn about the proper proportion of the face. In these projects, students also learned about the medium of oil pastels. They experienced layering and blending them to create new colors.

2nd Grade Students on Warm/Cool

These students have been learning about warm and cool colors and how they can create EMPHASIS in works of art.

Empty Bowls are ready for delivery!

The After School Art students have molded and glazed our 48 bowls for the Empty Bowls Luncheon.  Now they are being packed up for delivery. What a wonderful way to teach about service and contribution to our community!

Monochromatic in Fourth Grade

My fourth grade classes are studying Monochromatic Color Schemes. This is a real mind bender for them as their palette is limited to ONE color, plus black and white (which, by the way, are not considered colors). This skill, of creating tints and shades of a color, takes some practice. You may see more examples coming soon!  This is really pushing their boundaries and brains!

Creating Alma Woodsey Thomas Eclipses

My second grade students worked on these abstract collages with a substitute. It turned out to be a wonderful project for them and for her, as well. They observed Alma Woodsey Thomas' Eclipse, talked about the work, observed how she used her color, and discussed what is meant by "eclipse". Then, they cut a black circle for their eclipse and began tearing warm and cool color construction paper for their radiated light. This was also a great time to review gluing techniques and teach RADIAL design!
