Pow Wow with Kindergarten

We learned about painting with natural dyes and painting with paint made from nature.

2nd Grade Still Life

This was a wonderful project that was made up of  several I projects.  First, we discusses symmetry and symmetrical balance in art.  Then we made a symmetrical vase. We talked about pattern and did scratch art on vases. Then we talked about texture when we painted our backgrounds.  Then we moved to collage for our flowers and finally oil pastel blending on our fruit. Whew!!!!!  But aren't they beautiful??

Cute kitties

My kindergarten class is learning how shape and line create images.

Collage Still Life

My 2nd grade students have had multiple mini lessons with this project.  First we learned about symmetry with the vase.  Then we observed placement in composition to creat depth.  Finally we learned about collage.  It took endurance on their part.

Symbolism

These students created personal Crests that symbolized themselves or their families.

First grade warm and cool color study.

Below you will see some wonderful examples of warm color fish swimming in cool color oceans. This was a lesson talking about ANALOGOUS NEIGHBORS and how we can make the warm colors "pop out" from the cool colors. These students are doing a fabulous job!  This project was full of lessons on pattern and texture as well

1st grade Story Quilts

My first graders wrote a very quick story, illustrated it and then turned it into a Story Quilt.  This was inspired by the storyquts of Faith Ringgold.

Georgia O'Keefe Flowers

These beautiful flowers were painted by my after school art students.  They were inspired by the large flowers of Georgia O'Keefe.  They were able to look for the images of the flower they wanted and then reproduce it, with their own twist, in acrylics.

Encostic paintings

These

These are a couple of the beautiful encaustic paintings done byy after school art students.  Encaustic painting is a process of painting with melted wax.  In this case, melted crayon.  The students really enjoyed this new experience.

Illuminated Initials

The following are "Illuminated Initials" done by my 3rd grade students. They looked at and learned about Illuminated manuscripts and about personal symbols.  Combined, they created a work of art that represented themselves.  They also learned about a few principles of art as well.

Empty Bowls Workshop

For the last several years I have been part of a workshop to create pottery pieces for the silent auction at the Lutheran Social Services Empty Bowls Luncheon.  This year I was able to get through three pieces.  It is always fun but a great lesson in giving away for those less fortunate.

4th grade reviewing SHAPE, LINE, and PATTERN

My students, once again had a blast doing this project.  First we reviewed geometric shapes by discussing what makes a shape geometric.  Then we sprayed them with water and watched them bleed into organic shapes.  Using marker we enhanced the new organic shape, then filled in our background with line pattern (after reviewing the 5 categories of line).  Finally. We added a little touch of complementary color for emphasis.

Geometric to Organic Shape

This is always a good way to review shape with my 4th grade students.  Using water color markers they make geometric shapes.  Then spray with water and let them bleed. Next they outline with sharpie marker.  Will post again when the next step is completed!

After School Art class finishes strong!

My after school art students had to choose an artist, whose work they admired, and reproduce a piece of of their work.  This was their last project of the year and they really finished well.  They had to really study the piece and try to use the painting techniques used by that particular artist.  These are just a few  of the pieces.
