Collage Still Life

My 2nd grade students have had multiple mini lessons with this project.  First we learned about symmetry with the vase.  Then we observed placement in composition to creat depth.  Finally we learned about collage.  It took endurance on their part.

Symbolism

These students created personal Crests that symbolized themselves or their families.

First grade warm and cool color study.

Below you will see some wonderful examples of warm color fish swimming in cool color oceans. This was a lesson talking about ANALOGOUS NEIGHBORS and how we can make the warm colors "pop out" from the cool colors. These students are doing a fabulous job!  This project was full of lessons on pattern and texture as well

Illuminated Initials

The following are "Illuminated Initials" done by my 3rd grade students. They looked at and learned about Illuminated manuscripts and about personal symbols.  Combined, they created a work of art that represented themselves.  They also learned about a few principles of art as well.

Creating Alma Woodsey Thomas Eclipses

My second grade students worked on these abstract collages with a substitute. It turned out to be a wonderful project for them and for her, as well. They observed Alma Woodsey Thomas' Eclipse, talked about the work, observed how she used her color, and discussed what is meant by "eclipse". Then, they cut a black circle for their eclipse and began tearing warm and cool color construction paper for their radiated light. This was also a great time to review gluing techniques and teach RADIAL design!

These fifth grade students were in between lessons on Valentine's Day so it was a perfect day to teach about movement in art with hearts!

Textural Still life

One of my 4th grade classes has been working for quite a while on this one project. It was time consuming, but worth it. These still life collages are all about depth, perspective, and TEXTURE! Students were given time to create a drawing of their desired still life. Then, many different types of art media were made available with which to fill in the different objects. These have paint, tissue, patterened paper, silk flowers, cotton balls, and just about anything else they could find in my art room.

Collage Citiscapes

This second grade class looked at Citiscapes and began to reproduce them in paper. In their collages they showed understanding of depth, overlapping, in some cases, even reflections. It was fascinating to see the different ways they portrayed cities in their collages.
